LEV testing near youCompare local testers. Get three quotes.

Find a company to examine and test your local exhaust ventilation (LEV). COSHH requires a thorough examination and test at least once every 14 months, and more often for the four processes listed in Schedule 4. Search by postcode, or send one request for three quotes.

How it works

A straightforward way to find someone who covers your site.

  1. 01

    Start with your postcode

Find published testers near your workplace. Ask about experience with your type of LEV system.

  2. 02

    Request three quotes

Tell us about your LEV systems and the work they serve. Your enquiry goes to suitable testers who cover your area.

  3. 03

    The tester visits

Agree a date and price directly. Your tester examines the LEV system at your site.

Before you book

Four things to sort before the visit

The short version of our guide to choosing an LEV testing company.

  1. Describe what the extraction controls

Write down the process, the material and the number of hoods. Send every company the same description so the quotes cover the same work.

  2. Ask about experience as well as certificates

BOHS P601 covers thorough examination and testing, but a course alone does not prove competence. Ask who will attend and which systems like yours they have tested.

LevHQ shows the qualifications companies claim. We do not check them, so ask to see evidence.

  3. Agree the scope in writing

Confirm what the price includes: the examination, the measurements, the written report and any return visit. The LEV testing cost guide lists what to ask.

  4. Keep the report and act on it

Keep the record, or a summary, for at least five years. Fix the defects it lists before the next test is due.

Extraction at work

What gets tested

The equipment that captures airborne contaminants before people breathe them in.

LEV systems control dust, fume and vapour at the source, such as welding fume or wood dust. The examiner checks the hood, ducting, fan and filters, then whether the system still controls exposure. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guide HSG258, Controlling airborne contaminants at work, explains the full examination. New to LEV? Read what local exhaust ventilation is and how it works.

A welder works at a bench as an extraction hood draws fume away from the weld. A perforated downdraught table collects sawdust beside a sanding machine and extraction ducting. An operator in protective clothing and an air-fed hood sprays a panel towards a filter wall.

The essentials

What is LEV testing?

LEV testing is a thorough examination and test of extraction equipment, needed at least every 14 months. See what is checked and what a failed result means.

Planning ahead

How often is LEV testing required?

LEV must be thoroughly examined and tested at least every 14 months. See the four processes with shorter limits, when to test sooner and what to keep.

On the day

What happens during an LEV test?

An LEV test is a visit where an examiner inspects your extraction, measures airflow, watches smoke and dust, then reports. See each step and what to prepare.

After the visit

Understanding your LEV test report

Read an LEV test report with confidence: find the result, understand action priorities, compare benchmarks and know what to keep or query.

Questions

Questions duty holders ask

How often does LEV need testing?

At least once every 14 months under COSHH Regulation 9. Schedule 4 sets one-month or six-month intervals for four named processes. Test more often if wear could reduce performance between visits.

Who can carry out an LEV test?

A competent person with the right knowledge, skills and practical experience. BOHS P601 covers LEV examination and testing, but HSE says a training course by itself does not make someone competent.

How much does LEV testing cost?

Five companies listed on LevHQ publish starting prices of £150 to £250, checked on 19 October 2026. The price for your site depends on your systems, hoods, access and the report you need. Request three quotes with the same scope and compare them.

How long must I keep an LEV test report?

Keep the thorough examination and test record, or a suitable summary, for at least five years from the date it was made.

Does LevHQ check the companies it lists?

No. LevHQ lists companies and shows the qualifications they claim. We do not verify those claims. Ask each company for evidence and for references from similar work.
